About the Event
Goines, a former juvenile corrections officer, founded Old Skool Cafe, a 1920s jazz style supper club run by at-risk youth coming out of the system (incarceration or foster care). Goines believes that by sending these young people home without enough support to keep them on the right track, the system is essentially setting them up to fail. Finding a well-paying job can be a tough proposition when you have a criminal record, and she wanted to provide an alternative to gangs.
The San Francisco-based program offers eligible youth, ages 16 to 22, an opportunity to receive ground-up training in the hospitality world as well as mentorship and valuable life skills, earning Goines recognition for her work in a Forbes profile, and as a CNN Hero of the Year in 2013.
